The tiny kitten crouched at the edge of the nursery watching with wide eyes as rain poured through the sky. She hadn't taken much notice of rain before now, the large noisy rivets of water keeping her at the edge of the den. It was a little cold there, the tiny kitten shivering slightly. Maybe she should head back to where her mommy and siblings were. It would be warmer there nestled next to them instead of at the edge of the den. Her whiskers were starting to get damp droplets clinging along them in big fat drops ready to fall off with the mist of the rain spraying her face.
If she backed into the nursery she would be away from the water, and she would be warm again. But she wanted to see what that was about. Applekit wasn't quite brave enough to go out into it but she sat right there at the edge watching it. Maybe if she stared at it long enough she'd figure it out.
Just a few more pawsteps and she had made it…she could taste it now. Rabbitkit was so close to being out of the nursery for the first time in her two moons of life. The little kit was so bored, all her mother and bigger siblings did was smother her. She couldn’t play with the bigger kits (she was too little), she couldn’t pounce on her siblings (they were scared they would hurt her because she was too little), and she couldn’t go out of the nursery (she was too little and sickly). The common part of their reasoning was that she was too little. But Rabbitkit didn’t believe that at all. She was just as big as her siblings, wasn’t she? She only had to look up at them some of the…..well most of the time. But as her luck would have it she was quickly grabbed by the scruff and dragged away from the entrance of the nursery.
”Ooid! Fafs no aiw!” Came the complaints from the tiny brown tabby kitten as she looked at her big brother. Sootkit was being mean again and not letting her have fun. Her brother just sighed and placed her back in the nest. He had been left in charge when their mother had been one of the cats to go to the big battle and had not returned. And Rabbitkit knew she was going to go crazy soon. But what the little kit doesn’t know is that her mother had definitely not made it through the battle and would not see her kits ever again. She was left with just her brothers, and it was hard enough trying to explain things to the kit.
The moment Sootkit became distracted by one of her other siblings, the tiny kit bounded the other way and out of the nursery. She let out a delighted mewl at her success. Her golden eyes were wide as she scanned her surroundings. Everything looked so different out here. She found herself bouncing up and down in excitement, completely forgetting about the cold that she had or anything else. Her mother didn’t want any of the other warriors or apprentices to contaminate her, so she was pretty much kept isolated from anyone other than her siblings. Rabbitkit thought this was silly. But now she had a taste of what it was like outside.
Seconds later she realized there was something falling from the sky and her fur became wet. She didn’t understand what was going on, and didn’t know if she liked this or not. The second she realized it was rain, the kit began to mewl and run straight back for the nursery. Curling up just inside, she began to try and wash away all of the droplets with her tongue. She didn’t like that rain stuff, it was wet and cold and made her sneeze. With a huff, she realized this was taking too long. Rabbitkit got onto her paws and shook herself, her fur drying slightly, but still was wet and she was annoyed. Why would Sootkit let her do something like this anyway? Was he mousebrained? Glaring at her brothers, she saw they were still occupied. With a deep sigh, she curled into a ball, trying to warm up. Right now she was too cold to think about going over there. Maybe she would just stay here for a few minutes to warm up, then go attack him. Yes, that sounded like a plan.
Translation:”Ooid! Fafs no aiw!” = Sootkit! That’s not fair! [/p]
The small kitten was caught off guard when something barreled past her into the den. Applekit spun around once and fell over. Wide eyed she laid there panting. Straightening slowly she looked behind her to find out what it was that had come in racing past her. It had been fast!
A kitten that was a little bit bigger than her sat a short distance inside. She looked wet licking herself as if that would somehow make it better. Applekit slowly walked over to the kitten's side sniffing at her curiously. The sudden shake sent her sprawling back again letting out a mew in protest as the droplets hit her getting her wet as well.
She was much more cautious this time when she approached the kitten. Applekit stuck a paw out batting a couple times at the bigger kitten before sitting down. "Wet?"
Rabbitkit really was not the most observant she-cat you will ever meet. No, she is closer to the point of being oblivious at times, especially when she was on a mission to disobey her brother or do something she knew she should not be doing. It was not her fault, she just had an idea and it was necessary to get it out. If that meant she would be in trouble, she did not care. She was still young and learning right from wrong was hard. Especially when most things she did seemed to be wrong or got in trouble for doing, but lucky for her, Rabbitkit was good at getting out of trouble just as much as she was good at getting into it. All she had to do was completely confuse her brothers and give them her little innocent look she had perfected and she was set.
In saying all that, did she notice the other kit that was watching her? Did she even bother to look around when she shook her fur from the water that had accumulated from her excursion in the rain? If anyone would think any answer other than no they would need to re-evaluate how well they knew this little kit. Then again, most didn’t know Rabbitkit. It was just those few that had the rare privilege of meeting her. It was not as if Rabbitkit wanted it this way, it had been all her mother. If Rabbitkit had her own way, everyone would know her and she would be friends with everyone.
Speaking of her mother, now that it was mentioned she really was starting to miss her. Why hadn’t mommy come back yet? Did she forget about her? No…who could forget her? She was awesome! Sure she didn’t speak the best, but she was energetic and tried hard.
The only time that Rabbitkit had realized she had company was when she heard a voice speak to her. At first she thought it was something in her head talking again. She knew it was definitely not her brothers, last time she checked they were playing with each other on the other side of the nursery. Turning to face another kit she blinked. Was another cat talking to her? An actual cat had approached her? Sure, the kit was younger than her, but still a cat had approached her. And now the cat had spoken to her.
Oh great, what was she suppose to do, speak back? Her eyes widened with fear at the thought of having to speak. This could be problematic. Her own family couldn’t understand a word she said. How could someone she has never met? So instead of giving a verbal response, Rabbitkit just nodded her head at the question. Of course she was wet, she had been in that rain! It wasn't like she was eating a cloud and it bursted or something. She pointed with her tail to her wet paws, as an example.
Applekit came closer as the other kitten pointed to her paws. She sniffed at them curiously before licking one cautiously. It didn't taste good, a mixture of dirt and rain. Reaching out with one of her paws this time she batted at the other kitten tiny paw waving. She hit the kitten a few times before quickly backing up, only managing a couple steps back before she had to catch her balance again.
Rabbitkit had never been so still in her entire life. She normally would be mewling and protesting that someone was sniffing her. She wasn’t a piece of prey. If this had been one of her brothers, there would be no doubt Rabbitkit would be voicing her opinion, even though they probably would only understand about half of what she said. But this was a newcomer, a wildcard. How was she suppose to act around other kits? She didn’t know, she was too sheltered to know.
The moment her paw was licked, however, that was the last straw. The little kit mewled and shook her head. That was weird and uncalled for! Now what was the other kit doing? Rabbitkit stared at Applekit curiously. Why was she attacking her? She blinked and tilted her head to the side. What was going on here?
Rabbitkit saw this as a game. So she crouched, like she had seen the apprentices do. Not as if she watched them secretly or anything. No, her brother would eat her alive if they knew that. She wiggled her bottom and was about to pounce but tripped on her paws just as she went to do so. Landing awkwardly, she let out a huff of disappointment. Well…that was not right. She became upset with herself and then looked back at the other kit, huffing as she made her way back. She reached out to bat at Applekit’s ears, curiousity getting the better of her.
Applekit had her siblings that she played with. The games were always simple, none of the kits ready for anything too serious. They were still figuring out how to keep their balance, let alone starting to pounce on each other. The games they played were usually simple, the kittens batting at each other or nudging against each other to push the other around. Applekit liked the games, usually initiating them though she rarely won against her larger siblings.
This kitten didn't seem like she was quite sure what to make of Applekit's curious batting. Applekit watched the kitten with large unblinking eyes waiting to see what the other would do. She let out a short mew of happiness as the kit tilted her head inviting her to come after Applekit. Watching her Applekit bowed down mimicking the pose rather clumsily. Her tail twitched behind her bright eyes focused on the kitten as she got down into the same crouched position. When the kitten suddenly fell over herself Applekit looked in surprise. Why'd she fall?
When the other kitten walked over and began batting at her ears Applekit flattened them against her head. She watched the paw wave above her head before reaching up with her own paw and batting against it. Catching herself her eyes widened in surprise. This was fun!
