The apprentice couldn't sleep. He had tried every possible position to get comfortable in but nothing worked. Boulderpaw's mind just wasn't in the mood for rest. So, what did he do? The only thing he could do; go out of his den and look up at the stars. The air was warm and the sky dark. He guessed it was early morning by how still his surroundings were. No matter what, the stars still twinkled in the sky.
As the young tom looked up at those stars from his secluded spot, he thought. He thought about StarClan and the many cats in their ranks. His mother, foster mother, father and many more. It was rare that Boulderpaw ever thought about what it was like, up in the stars. He had this life to worry about. However, that's what he thought about. It helped alleviate some of the guilt. The apprentice mused to himself that if he did not feel guilty after witnessing and running away from such a horrible battle, then he must be a heartless cat. Sometimes he wished he could be just that.
Finally, she would be able to spend the night back in the apprentices den. With her latest illness she had been secluded to the medicine cat’s den and had not seen her own bed since before the great battle. She couldn’t wait to get back and curl up in the nest. Now that she thought about it, she could move her nest back towards the warmer part of the den. It wasn’t as if there were many apprentices left. The den had been so full prior, and being one of the younger apprentices she had no choice but to sleep toward the front. Maybe this would help her not get so sick…wishful thinking there.
Just as she was finally about to curl up in her nest, deciding to move it tomorrow, she heard shuffling pawsteps. Half of her night had been spent with waiting for permission to return. Smallpaw rarely slept much anyway. She was too eager to get out and help. She was eager to get back out and hunt, to do something other than just sit still and rest. Instead of trying to go to sleep, she became curious. Why would anyone be up at this time?
Padding back out of the den, the little she-cat looked around. She knew she had seen someone come this way. Where did he go? She blinked, and grinned. Good thing she was great at tracking. Sniffing the air, she caught onto Boulderpaw’s scent. She found her paws moving on their own toward him. Finally, she spotted him and sat down nearby. ”Whatcha doing?
she said, staring at him and trying to figure what he was thinking.
Boulderpaw unintentionally froze up as soon as he heard pawsteps. His ears swiveled a bit to pick up the noise. He had been a bit more skittish than usual recently; a habit he was trying to make himself stop. Still, he silently thanked StarClan when he saw the stalking cat. Smallpaw, a fellow apprentice. The large tom was forced to look down upon her as he replied. "Oh, nothing much." He turned his gaze back to the stars. Boulderpaw was uncomfortable with looking down on others though he had to do it quite often thanks to his large size. "Just thinking about stuff."
The gray tabby paused here to let his thoughts wander again. This time to thoughts that were less... heavy. This time he thought about his nest in the apprentice den. Though he enjoyed the medicine cat den, there was nothing like his old nest. Happily, Boulderpaw's injuries would soon be fully healed and Blizzardpaw would, hopefully, let him go back soon. "I kind of miss the apprentice den..." He voiced slowly as if he was chewing over the words that just came out of his muzzle. "I hope I can get back to my duties soon. The clan needs all the help it can get..."

And here it went again, another cat that had to look down to speak with her. She willed the fur all over her body not to puff up in anger. At least he wasn’t doing it intentionally. That irked her more than anything. Smallpaw looked up and realized that it wasn’t because she may be a little smaller than some of her clanmates, no it was he was big. But then she saw something in his eyes, a feeling she felt herself quite often. It was the same feeling of having to look at someone a different way. While normal cats could have eye-level connection with others, being a little smaller (in her case) or larger (as in Boulderpaw’s case) was like being an outcast. ”Oh. Sorry didn’t mean to interrupt you.
she added.
Smallpaw looked at Boulderpaw, as best as she could, when he spoke. ”I just got released to sleep in the apprentices den again. My nest was so cold and it feels weird to sleep in there again. It’s so lonely in there.” she mewed softly. But he was right, the clan needed as much help as possible.
”I’m sure you will be back to helping as soon as you can. Maybe now that I am better, I can at least do the hunting while everyone else does the heavy lifting.” Smallpaw grinned. ”Maybe you can help me carry the prey I catch back one day. That wouldn’t hurt your injuries would it?”She knew what it was like being unable to help the clan and wanting to so badly. If only a small task, like sorting out bad prey or something.
In all actuality, Boulderpaw liked the medicine cat den. He enjoyed the smell of herbs and his pelt was thick enough to keep him quite warm. As for the loneliness... Well, he was used to his own company so that wasn't much of a big deal. As long as he wasn't in complete isolation for, at the very most, about 4 days then he would be good. Though not the most social being in the world, the tom liked the company of other cats and enjoyed making friends.
"Well, congratulations!" The tabby let out a playful, celebratory smile but then went a bit more serious. "I actually like it there... Did you know that I actually wanted to become the medicine cat apprentice? My dad talked me out of it though so I just stuck to warrior training... I like being a warrior and stuff but I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be the medicine cat."
Then his companion went on to say something about helping. Now that got his ears perked up! Boulderpaw loved to help! He mulled over the idea for a moment before saying his thoughts. "I think that could work. As long as I keep my tail clean, I think that idea's absolutely perfect!" The tom brought his cobweb-wrapped tail around up to his shoulder to examine it. "Blizzardpaw said my tail's still prone to infection so no swimming or dragging it around." His tail-tip was bitten off in the battle and it was proving to be slightly annoying. Besides throwing off his balance, the tail also looked rather weird without its black tip.
Smallpaw couldn’t be more opposite in the fact that she hated the medicine cat’s den. The little she-cat had spent so much time in the den in her last eight moons it was almost ridiculous. As a kit, she was in the den at least once every other day. She had been so susceptible to disease with her awful immune system that sometimes if there was any hint of sickness in the nursery, Smallpaw was just put in the medicine cat den in isolation. It had been for the best, or so she was told. Her being the medicine cat apprentice had never been thought of. No, she was too stubborn for that. She wanted to be like the other kits.
The orange apprentice bounced on her paws in excitement. ”Thanks, I’ve been waiting for forever to be able to get back to doing something!” Forever in her time was longer than two days, but essentially it had been several weeks, her being sick, then catching another illness. She listened, actually wondering what it would be like as the medicine cat apprentice herself. She quickly dismissed the thought. ”It wouldn’t have been a good idea for me. Cats come in sick and I probably would have caught whatever they had, and would be no good. I’m better as a regular apprentice. I bet you would have made a good one, though. You are really nice but I don’t know how we as a clan would work without you. Your size gives you a huge advantage for fighting, though. So we might now have done so well in the big battle.” She really had not heard about Boulderpaw being a candidate for medicine cat apprentice all those moons ago. That had been news for her.
Smallpaw nodded eagerly, she actually had someone to go with her! Someone who wanted to go with her! This was close to being a first. Friends had never come easy for her, and to have someone actually want to do something with her was beyond awesome. When he brought his tail around the she-cat became curious. ”Ooh, is that your tail?” her eyes were watching it with curiosity. She nodded, and thought about it. ”Then we won’t go to the river to hunt, maybe just on the riverbank and try to catch a vole or something else?” she was thinking of ways to not get it wet, and going to the river was not a good idea.
Noticing Blizzardpaw come out of the den she blinked to the other she-cat. ”We aren’t doing much, just talking. And other stuffs.” she mewed, completely omitting the part about going to catch some prey.
Blizzardpaw nodded at the two as Smallpaw lies. Blizzardpaw didn't notice anything. Even if she was suspicious she's to trusting in her clan-mates.
"Can I join you?" The pale she-cat mewed. Blizzardpaw did need to connect more with the apprentices and kits, she needed one of her own soon. With so little cats there was less food, which meant that cats would be prone to sickness. The she cat would need all the help she could get.
